Shih Tzu

This breed of dogs comes from China. Scientists who tested the DNA of the Shih Tzu found out that it is one of the oldest of all dog breeds, just like basenjis are. Ancient breeds like us have genes that are close to wolves' genes, and our DNA has been found in skeletons from the same places where people lived 10,000 years ago. There are paintings of Shih Tzu from as long ago as 1500, which is another way to prove that it is a very old breed.
In Mandarin, Shih Tzu means "lion dog."  The proper way to say it is sheet-soo.  If you say it wrong, you might end up saying a bad word for "poop."  The name of the breed can be either singular or plural, so you don't have to bother putting an "s" on the end of it.  In England in the 1930s, people gave these dogs the nickname of Chrysanthemum Dog because of the way their hair grows up from their noses and around their faces in all directions.  Sometimes they are also called Tibetan Lion Dogs.
Shih Tzu have a double coat that is worn long for shows.  But Shih Tzu that are just family dogs usually get their coats cut short.  Here are some of the colors that Shih Tzu can be:  gold, white, brown, black mask gold, black-and-white, solid black, solid liver, liver-and-white, brindle-and-white, and gray-and-white.  Also a Shih Tzu can sometimes be solid blue in color.
Shih Tzu are 10"--11" tall, weigh 9--16 pounds, and live 12--16 years.  They are compact and solid, sweet, playful, and friendly.  They are not really meant to be watch dogs, although they may tell you if somebody is at the door.  But as soon as that person comes in, they will likely want to make friends.  Because it is so friendy, the Shih Tzu usually gets along well with other dogs, with cats, and with children.
The AKC ranks Shih Tzu at number 11 in terms of how many registrations there were in 2011 and 2012.  In 2007 the breed was number 9, and in 2002 it was number 10.  What these little dogs do best is sit in your lap and be companions, which is just what they were bred to do.  They are very sweet and very smart.  They do well in obedience classes, and they also are good at things like agility competition.  They don't need a whole lot of exercise, so they make good apartment dogs, but it's best to take them out for a walk every day.
Because Shih Tzu have short muzzles, they do not tolerate heat very well.  Also they may snore and wheeze and have other respiratory issues.  Sometimes they have back problems because of their short legs and long backs.  And if their hair gets in their eyes, it might cause irritation and infection.
But in general, this is a very nice breed of dog.  Mom has met some Shih Tzu at the Humane Society, and she says she liked them.  Usually they get adopted soon because a lot of people are big fans of the breed.  I told Mom that maybe we should get one, but she said she does not want any more dogs right now, especially not until she pays all of Nicky's vet bills.  So I guess we will not be getting a Shih Tzu.

Bengal Cats

The Bengal cat is one of the most charming and stunning cat breeds. To many people, they are thought of as "wild cats" but they are completely domestic. I have fostered many cats but the Bengal cat has different personality traits than your average house cat. They are extremely intelligent and can be very demanding if they don't get what they want. They are also very vocal and can impersonate what you do. They are very loving and playful. Bengals are not meant for every cat owner, so research thoroughly before attempting to adopt one.
What is a Bengal? Bengal cats are descended from Japan. The wild Asian Leopard cat was bred with a domestic cat to make the Bengal. This happened sometime in the 1940's. It wasn't until the 1970's that the Bengal cat appeared in North America. Most Bengals have a very athletic, muscular form. They have the look of a wild cat, with different markings then you've probably seen on other cats. Their coats are either leopard printed or marbled. Most have the "mascara look" around the eyes. The Bengals I fostered all looked like leopards. Some cat associations refuse to accept Bengals as a breed. The cat fanciers Association does not accept "hybrid breeds" such as the Bengal.

They are absolutely gorgeous animals but they should only be in homes where they can receive a lot of attention. This is important and something that many people overlook. There are many Bengals in shelters because they were adopted by people and then they changed their minds. So please, think very carefully before considering adoption. I may sound like a broken record but it's something I feel strongly about.

A Bengal cats temperament will vary on it's development. Bengal cats are classified on the level of their filial (or offspring) generation. A F1 Bengal would be the first offspring from cross breeding and would therefore not be as tame as an F4 (fourth generation). It's important to research your Bengal cat's development. Many people don't take this into consideration when adopting a Bengal and are unprepared.

Right. Back to the Bengals and their unique personality. As stated before before, Bengals are vocal. I should clarify. A Siamese is vocal, A Bengal can raise the roof if it wants to. They love conversation and will speak with you quite easily. They also love water. Most cats avoid water at all costs, but Bengals enjoy playing in it. They love to play hide and seek and are very kittenish in their games. Obviously, they are not your typical cat. They only look wild, however. They should not be adopted just because you want a "wild cat". They are energetic, social, extroverted cats that love human companionship.

Ragdoll Cat Health

You need to know how to care for your Ragdoll cat or kitten before you bring one home. Do some research to see if it's even the right cat breed for you. Something really nice about the Ragdoll cat breed is that they are known for having many health problems like some other breeds. Just as long as you feed them right and they get their exercise, they can live up to the high teens or maybe even 20 years!
Ragdoll cats, like Siamese cats have a sensitive stomach so finding the right cat food that agrees with them is extremely important. Going into the pet store and picking out the most expensive or the cheapest food is not going to work. Many pet stores have breed specific foods, that would be a good option for your Ragdoll. You could even take the route of making your own after you find out what agrees with him or her. This way you know exactly what's going into their body and you can modify it if need be.

I suggest to anyone with cats to leave some cat toys laying around the house so that when you are not around or able to play with him or her they can entertain themselves. Cat trees are a great option as well. They need lots of love, attention and playtime with you so don't deny them of that. This is all they have so be loving and loyal to them and they will be the best companion you could ever ask for.

Ragdoll Cat Personality

The Ragdoll is gentle and laid back. Just like dogs, these cats need to develop good socialization skills so if it's an option, you want to start when they are young. They love attention and being held so don't be afraid to pick him or her up at anytime. That also helps socialize them.

A Ragdoll cat would be fine if they were the only pet in the house. They don't need another animal companion, they actually prefer humans over other pets. These cats almost become limp, just like a ragdoll when you pick them up. Ragdolls are welcoming to people and kids they don't know, they have quite a bit of patience with small children as well.

Soon, very soon
